As you research ways to fuel your fleet you’ll notice that there’s 3 major options: on site bulk fuel tanks, wethosing, or fleet cards. Bulk fuel tanks usually work for huge companies with 50+ trucks. If you operate a small to medium sized fleet you will likely be comparing wethosing and fleet fuel cards.
Let’s first breakdown what each fuel program is;
Wethosing- Wethosing also know as mobile fueling is when a fuel truck comes to your business and individually fuels each vehicle.
Fleet Card- Fleet card or fuel card is a secure payment method for drivers to purchase fuel at cardlock fuel stations, retail stations, and truck stops.
Which One Is Right For Me?
It depends on how your fleet operates. So let’s go through a few questions to help you find the answer.
1. Is your fleet both gas and diesel?
In some states such as California, only diesel can be legally wethosed. If your fleet does contain some gas vehicles you may consider using a fleet card to keep all your vehicles under the same fuel program.
2. Do all your trucks operate on the same schedule?
To rely on wethosing as your main fuel program, you need all your trucks in the yard at the same time while the mobile fuel delivery truck is fueling your vehicles. If your business only operates 8am to 5pm the wethosing truck can come during after hours to fuel every vehicle.
This is important because you don’t want to miss the mobile fuel delivery truck and have a couple of your trucks run on empty. Also mobile fuel delivery pricing is volume based, so the less fuel that is delivered the higher the price per gallon and delivery fees will be.
.
3. Do your trucks return to your yard every night?
This question goes hand in hand with number 2. If you have trucks that are over the road and don’t return to your yard, wethosing will not work for obvious reasons.
4. How many gallons of fuel do you purchase monthly?
Like I mentioned before, wethosing is usually volume driven because mobile fueling companies have to include the cost of sending a truck and paying a driver to deliver the fuel. If you purchase under 5,000 gallons of diesel on a monthly basis you will likely be paying a higher price than what you can buy diesel at a regular gas station or truck stop.
.
5. Is there a commercial fuel station near you?
Sometimes wethosing is a must, because there’s not a fuel station nearby that carries diesel and is large enough to accommodate your trucks. However, if there is a local fuel station near you, you may be able to save money and have a fuel source that you can rely on 24/7. You can find a commercial fuel station near you here.
What if wethosing won’t work for me?
If wethosing won’t work for you, fleet fuel cards are a great option. Fleet cards work for any trucking company. They simply enable you to control your fuel purchases at cardlock fuel stations, gas stations, and truck stops.
All you need is a fuel station near you and a fleet card will work. You can learn more about how fleet cards work here.
