WEX vs Voyager: Which Fuel Card Is Better?

If you’re looking into fleet cards, WEX and Voyager are probably at the top of your list. That’s probably because on paper they appear to be almost the same fuel card, but what’s the difference and which fuel card is better?

Let’s first look at the stats.

Locations

The WEX fuel card boast 180,000 fuel locations plus another 45,000 maintenance locations while the Voyager fleet card has 230,000 fuel and maintenance locations all together. Do the math and you’ll realize both fuel cards are accepted at almost all the same locations.

Reporting

Both the WEX fuel card and the Voyager gas card have very similar online reporting capabilities and will provide you with all the same data you’ll need to manage your fleet.

Controls & Alerts

Again, not much differentiation here, you’ll find the controls and alerts for both cards are very similar if not the same.

Pricing

Both fuel cards run off a retail based pricing structure which means you’ll likely be paying the price at the pump no matter where you go.

Discounts

WEX does have some brand specific discounts that work at select locations. If you prefer to have your fleet fueling at a specific brand only, you may want to look into these discount programs.

The Voyager fuel card does not claim to have discounts because their strategy is to send their customers to the cheapest locations in town which usually outweigh any brand specific discount anyways.

Voyager fuel card fees may vary depending on which Voyager fuel card company you go with. There are some Voyager fuel card companies that charge absolutely no fees while others do charge fees.

Besides all the minor differences mentioned above, the biggest difference between the WEX and Voyager card is the way they service their customers.

WEX is a large corporate company that directly services it customers. So when you have a problem, you call a 1-800 number, work your way through the phone directory, and then speak to someone.

Voyager is owned by U.S. Bank who uses fuel companies to distribute their fuel cards. These smaller fuel companies service the customer which means you’ll probably get an assigned salesperson to handle your account and when you call customer service someone will answer the phone immediately.

With minor difference in stats, it really comes down to customer service preference. Some companies are more comfortable dealing with large corporate companies, while other prefer to have a more direct hands on service from a smaller company.

Either way you can’t go wrong, it’s just up to your personal taste.
