Which State Pays Most In Diesel Taxes?

Have you ever wondered how much tax you are paying for diesel? Let’s start with the federal excise tax of 24.4¢ per gallon which you pay no matter what state you live in. Then you have to add your state tax/ fees to get your final tax you pay per gallon. Currently the national average for total state taxes/fees is 31.01¢ per gallon totaling to 55.42¢ when you add the federal excise tax. So where does your state match up?

Well, according to the American Petroleum Institute (API), if your fleet operates in any of these states you are paying the highest diesel taxes in the country.

  9. Washington- 61.90¢
  10. North Carolina- 61.15¢
