All sorts of vehicles make use of CFN sites, from large 18-wheeler trucks to my 93’ Volvo station wagon. However, CFN sites are really more suited for the larger vehicle and uniquely so for construction companies, whose specific needs are all met by what goods and services a CFN site has to offer. All in all, you can’t go wrong when considering CFN for your construction companies.
Controls
CFN offers the highest level of controls, which not only work to save company money but company time as well. With a CFN card, you will know the date and time a card was used, as well as the location, fuel amount, dollar amount, odometer reading the Driver ID. All combined, given the amount of information transmitted with each purchase it is very difficult for anyone to use these cards illicitly.
Off-Road
Construction companies make use of a lot of fuel types that aren’t available at the typical retail station, but can be found at a CFN site. Dyed diesel for example. Since dyed diesel is sold tax free, but restricted to off-road use, construction companies are situated to benefit mightily given that so much of their equipment is for off-road use anyway. As a result, construction companies can save anywhere between 40 cents to a dollar depending on the state.
Track Usage by Job Number
Before fuel can be purchased, a driver will be required to input a Driver ID# and an odometer reading. However, an additional value, this one chosen by the customer can be assigned for any miscellaneous reason. A popular option for this value is a Job Number, which can be assigned to a particular task so that all purchases for that particular task can be gathered together in an invoice. For example, a carpenter is working on a series of houses in a new development and driving to and from the office, the developments, and various hardware stores. Each time he stops to buy fuel, he would be required to input the job number. In doing so, the driver is helping the accountant’s to value the total cost of the job and to do so efficiently.
18 Wheel Access
You won’t find a CFN site on the corner of a busy intersection, because there just isn’t enough space at a location like that to accommodate commercial vehicles. That’s why, when you do find CFN sites you’ll find them in industrial areas or off the highway where there’s plenty of space for the largest vehicles on the road to pull in.
Wholesale Pricing
When not purchasing red dyed diesel, construction companies will still save when buying fuel at a CFN site since pricing is based on the wholesale price set at the rack. Meaning that on average fuel bought at a CFN site will be 20 cents cheaper than at a competing station.

Separate Invoice By Department
At the end of each month, the distributor through which you have purchased a CFN card can divide the invoice so that each department of your company only receives what information they need. As an example, while the accounting department is only interested in paying the bill, a fleet manager is going to be more interested in potential fraudulent purchases and inefficient fuel-ups. As a result, by dividing the invoice you can save your employees time and increase their ability to do their jobs.
