Despite what you may have heard or read on websites, marketing material etc., no fuel card can restrict a driver to only purchasing one fuel type. Why?
It’s Not The Fuel Card’s Fault…
It’s not the fuel cards fault, the POS (Point of Sale) software systems that retail gas stations and truck stops use are not capable of of approving a transaction and restricting a specific fuel type at the same time.
So whether you use a Fuelman card, a Voyager card, a Wex card, or any other card for that matter, you won’t be able to stop a driver from buying gas or diesel.
How To Know When Your Driver’s Buying The Wrong Fuel Type
So what can you do instead to catch drivers who are buying the wrong type of fuel? It’s simple, setup product exemption reports. Exemption reports notify you via email whenever the wrong type of fuel is purchased immediately after the transaction takes place. So you can’t stop the driver from purchasing the wrong type of fuel, but you can catch them immediately after it happens.
There’s One Fuel Card That Can Restrict Fuel Types
There is one exception to this rule. The CFN fuel card which is a cardlock fuel card does have product controls only at CFN cardlock locations. These fueling stations are regulated by the CFN network so they have to have the same POS systems that have the capability of restricting the driver from buying the wrong type of fuel. So if your driver has a diesel CFN fuel card and is trying to purchase gas at a CFN cardlock location, the pump won’t turn on.
